On July 12, 2026, as another meaningful week of WMU Girls Camp came to a close, campers, families, staff members, and leaders gathered to honor a woman whose faithful service has profoundly shaped Woman’s Missionary Union throughout Maryland and Delaware. Before those assembled, the WMU Executive Board and camp staff presented Melody Knox with a commemorative plaque, several beautiful bouquets of flowers, and heartfelt expressions of gratitude in recognition of her eleven years of service as Executive Director of the Woman’s Missionary Union of Maryland and Delaware and as a valued member of the Baptist Convention of Maryland and Delaware staff.
The gifts presented that day were visible expressions of deep appreciation, but no plaque, bouquet, or collection of words could fully capture the breadth of Melody’s influence or the countless lives touched through her ministry.
For more than two decades, Melody served with wisdom, diligence, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the mission of God. Her leadership was never confined to an office, a title, or an administrative responsibility. Melody traveled throughout the two-state convention, visiting churches and meeting with pastors, ministry leaders, WMU groups, and congregations. She faithfully shared the resources available through WMU and worked to ensure that churches of every size had access to meaningful missions discipleship materials.
Melody understood that missions education is not merely a program. It is the lifelong formation of believers who recognize that every follower of Jesus has a place in God’s mission. Through her work, preschoolers were introduced to the beauty of God’s love for the nations. Children and teenagers were challenged to see themselves as participants in the Great Commission. Women and men of every age were encouraged to pray, give, serve, and go. From the youngest child to the most senior saint, Melody championed the conviction that no one is too young, too old, too inexperienced, or too ordinary to live on mission for Jesus.
Across countless conferences, gatherings, and ministry events, Melody encouraged women to embrace God’s calling in every season of life. She reminded them that their gifts mattered, their obedience mattered, and their faithful service could have an eternal impact. Whether speaking to a large audience or having a quiet conversation with one woman, Melody possessed a remarkable ability to strengthen, affirm, and inspire others.
Her influence was perhaps most tenderly seen through her oversight of the annual WMU Girls Camp and Boys Camp. Year after year, hundreds of children and teenagers from fourth through twelfth grade gathered to learn Scripture, experience Christian community, hear about missions, and encounter the transforming message of the Gospel. Under Melody’s leadership, these camps became sacred spaces where young people were known, loved, discipled, and invited to respond to Jesus.
Many campers surrendered their lives to Christ for the first time. Others rededicated their lives to Him. Still others discovered a deeper understanding of God’s Word, God’s mission, and God’s purpose for their lives. Only eternity will reveal the full impact of the seeds planted during those weeks of camp and the generations of disciples, missionaries, ministry leaders, faithful church members, mothers, fathers, and servants who will carry those seeds forward.
Melody also represented Maryland and Delaware with excellence on the national stage through her service on the National WMU General Board. She participated in national gatherings, cultivated relationships with WMU leaders across the country, and ensured that the voices, ministries, and churches of Maryland and Delaware were faithfully represented. At home, she facilitated annual Women on Mission conferences and Maryland and Delaware WMU annual meetings, creating opportunities for believers to worship, learn, connect, and renew their commitment to the Great Commission.
Her executive leadership was marked by integrity, careful stewardship, and professionalism. She handled administrative and fiscal responsibilities with excellence, ensuring that the ministry entrusted to her was managed wisely and faithfully. Yet Melody’s legacy cannot be measured only through budgets balanced, meetings organized, events facilitated, or resources distributed.
Her greatest legacy is found in people.
It is found in the leaders she trained, the women she mentored, the girls she encouraged, the churches she supported, and the missionaries she faithfully lifted in prayer. It is found in the generosity she inspired, the mission offerings she promoted, and the urgency she cultivated for taking the Gospel to those who have not yet heard. It is found in every person who came to understand that missions is not reserved for a select few, but is the joyful responsibility of every believer.
Melody helped churches pray for missions, fund missions, teach missions, and participate in missions. She continually called God’s people to look beyond themselves and remember the nations, the lost, the vulnerable, and those still waiting to hear the name of Jesus.
As Melody concludes this chapter of service, she leaves behind a legacy that is both lasting and irreplaceable. Her presence will be greatly missed, but the fruit of her labor will continue to grow through every leader she equipped, every woman she encouraged, every child she discipled, and every church she inspired to live on mission.
Melody, thank you for eleven years of faithful leadership for WMU and more than twenty years with the BCM/D. Thank you for serving with humility, excellence, perseverance, and love. Thank you for believing in women and girls, supporting churches, championing missions discipleship, and continually pointing others toward Jesus and His Great Commission.
You have served well. You have planted faithfully. You have left an enduring mark upon Woman’s Missionary Union, the Baptist Convention of Maryland and Delaware, and the Kingdom of God.
May the Lord bless you richly in the season ahead, and may you always know how deeply you are loved, appreciated, and honored.
