PORT DEPOSIT, Md. — Amber Stewart, a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church, is thrilled to have been chosen Ms. Wheelchair Maryland U.S.A. 2026.
An author, artist, and herbalist, Stewart’s platform for her new role is “Expanding Community Access by Eliminating Financial Barriers for Adults With Disabilities.”
It’s a subject Stewart is passionate about.
She says, “I plan to work with state leaders and community event organizers to implement a waiver that allows caregivers to attend community events with a disabled adult at no cost, and to offer half-priced tickets to disabled adults who are financially below the poverty level. This will open up so many opportunities for disabled people to actively participate in their communities without worrying as much about money.”
Another opportunity Stewart values even more is sharing the gospel as God gives her the opportunity.
“I am honored to have this opportunity to share my Jesus with the world. When I stop and think of how far God has brought me since I was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy type 1 at six months old and given a death sentence of two years or less, I am humbled and overjoyed to remember His faithfulness. If I achieve nothing else in my journey to become the next Ms. Wheelchair USA 2026, it will be that everyone who knows Amber Stewart knows that there is a God, He doesn’t make mistakes, and He is GOOD.”
Stewart has written several articles for BCM/D, sharing practical, hands-on ways for churches to be more accessible and ways to welcome individuals with disabilities.
As Ms. Wheelchair Maryland, Stewart — like other winners throughout the nation — will advocate for accessibility, inclusion and disability rights while celebrating the achievements of those affected by disability. She will also have opportunities to travel, make public appearances, and share through print, radio and other media outlets.
