BRUNSWICK, Md. — First Baptist Church of Brunswick is not only a place of worship but also a vital hub for the community. In addition to hosting community wellness classes and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, the church leadership has taken strong steps in strategic community outreach. And recently, there has been new life in this historic church. In addition to a thriving disability ministry, the church, with funds from a State Missions Offering Grant, expanded their youth ministry, adding a new teen center. They also opened a sound studio where local artists can record.

The church is facing an alarming predicament that could lead to its demolition unless immediate action is taken to preserve its structural integrity, particularly the bell tower. For over 116 years, FBC Brunswick has stood as a prominent piece of the Brunswick skyline, serving as a testament to the town’s history and a symbol of faith. Its iconic bell tower has drawn generations of worshipers and served as a reference point for the community. However, the ravages of time and the elements have taken their toll, leading to water damage, plaster blowouts, and structural concerns in the bell tower. If left unaddressed, the bell tower’s deterioration poses a significant risk not only to the bell itself but also to the entire building.

In response to this urgent call for preservation, the church has initiated a three-year “Capture the Vision” Campaign, a capital fundraising effort to ensure their continued role as a significant part of Brunswick’s history and future.

The challenges may be significant, but they are not insurmountable. Together, the congregation and the community are embarking on a journey of revitalization and restoration, ensuring that this historic treasure remains a beacon of faith and a pillar of the community.

They have also established a place for donations to help with the restoration —  www.SaveTheBellTower.org. Additionally, Senior Pastor Phil Graves said he welcomes ideas from pastors across Maryland/Delaware on ways to repair the building.
