Obituary: Reverend Charles Alfred Casey
By Casey Family
Reverend Charles Alfred Casey died on March 4, 2026. He was 91. His life verse was Proverbs 3:5–7.
Rev. Casey served faithfully in ministry in Maryland for over four decades. He was a church planter who started North Glen Community Church in Glen Burnie and Calverton Baptist Church in Silver Spring. He also served as pastor of Valley Baptist Church in Lutherville and Temple Baptist Church in Baltimore. After his retirement in 2000, he was an interim pastor at Worthington Baptist Church.

He and his wife, Jeannette, had a passion for supporting and encouraging married couples serving together in ministry, and they led retreats for pastors and their wives at Skycroft Conference Center. Realizing that marriages were often entered into lightly as something expected in society, Rev. Casey wrote his doctoral thesis on pre-marriage counseling. He wanted to make sure couples understood why they were entering marriage. He counseled couples with questions that made them think about things beyond the wedding day.
Rev. Casey also served on the Baptist Convention of Maryland/Delaware (BCM/D) General Mission Board and served multiple terms as BCM/D president.
During the U.S. Bicentennial, Congresswoman Gladys Noon Spellman attended a Bicentennial celebration where Rev. Casey offered the invocation at the beginning of the program. Mrs. Spellman was so impressed by the prayer that she asked Rev. Casey for a copy and had it read into the Congressional Record on April 28, 1976.
He was influential in many people’s lives wherever he lived. He made lifelong friends.
When he moved to Florida with his wife, Jeannette, in 2009, they began attending a local church. When their Sunday School teacher moved out of state, the class asked Rev. Casey to teach, and he, of course, said yes.
In 2024, Rev. Casey published his book, It Happened in a Garden, which he wrote from his assisted living room. He still had more teaching to do, and he felt the need to get his message out into the world. The book is about three gardens linked from the Garden of Eden to the Garden of Gethsemane.
Rev. Casey’s body may have failed him, but his mind was sharp. He ministered to the staff at the different facilities where he lived. They knew they could come to him with their problems, and he would listen and counsel them. He was respected and loved by them.
He was also loved and respected by his family. Whenever family and friends were in town visiting, they always asked to go visit him. He loved their company. It was always a mutually enjoyable visit.
His family, whom he left behind, will miss Rev. Casey. They know he is able to be with those who have gone before him.
He was preceded in death by Jeannette, who died in 2018. He leaves behind his daughter, Shivaun, and her husband, Doug Kearney; his son, Charles, and his wife, Kathy Casey; four grandchildren—Jack, Jarrod, Emily, and Sarah; and six great-grandchildren—Xander, Emery, Liam, Launa, Marisol, and Riker.
We know we will see him again.
A Celebration of Life is planned for August.
