Dan Hyun serves as BCM/D church partnership leader, encouraging his team to help catalyze partnerships among affiliated churches and associations. He oversees four partnership missionaries as well as collegiate, children & youth, BCM/D Ready, women’s and pastor’s wives ministries. He explains, “A significant part of our work is helping to connect the amazing people throughout BCM/D to one another. Our goal is healthy pastors and healthy churches, guided by values of reconciliation, formation and multiplication. I want our team to see their role as catalyzing churches for missional impact for the world we live in today and the world that is coming in the future.”

Hyun said he is encouraged and blessed to work with the BCM/D staff, who he describes as “good, kind-hearted people with creative grit and often doing more with less.”

Regarding challenges, Hyun pointed to the difficulty of establishing unity across diverse cultures and populations. He said larger cultural shifts have made ministry particularly difficult. “Churches are navigating through significant change and future decisions.” The BCM//D, however, is persevering through these challenging seasons and bearing gospel fruit.

Speaking about ethnic diversity, Hyun naturally feels the pain of the struggles some Asian churches face. “Some churches comprised of Asian peoples can feel marginalized for different reasons among broader evangelical communities, including in the BCM/D. It can make it challenging to feel a part of our community. In many of these churches, the Lord is particularly moving among younger people.”

In an effort to foster change and discussion, Hyun created the annual Ethnos Conference, which will be held on Oct. 7 at Central Presbyterian Church, Towson. “Ethnos was started as a missions conference with a focus on areas and issues not typically addressed in our context, such as matters of justice, race and ethnicity, the poor, etc. “This year’s theme is ‘United Witness,’ exploring how, in our divided culture, our unity may be the most powerful way we point to Christ.”

In addition to his role as a denominational leader, pastor, husband and father, Hyun serves as a professor and writer and speaks on a variety of issues, including justice, mission, reconciliation, and leadership. His latest book is The Bible in 52 Weeks: A Yearlong Bible Study.

At home, Hyun and his wife Judie are busy with work, church, and their young teen daughters, Deborah and Tabitha.

“It has helped me to try to keep my priorities in order: God, Family, and Work/Ministry. Also, my own commitment to holistic health has been beneficial to me.”

He enjoys working out, eating good food, and having engaging conversations about culture.
