URGENT: Calling churches to action on Senate Bill 116

The Christian Life and Public Affairs Committee of the Baptist Convention of Maryland/Delaware is bringing before you a concern in need of urgent attention and action concerning same-sex marriage in Maryland.

Senate Bill 116, entitled ‘Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act,’ was heard in the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee on Feb. 8 and is expected to receive a favorable vote out of committee sometime this week. This would bring the bill up for debate and a final vote on the Senate floor vote, all of which is expected to occur within the next week or two. Historically, the Senate has been the hold-out on passage of same-sex marriage legislation in previous sessions.

This bill seeksto amend a Maryland statute in the Family Law Article, Title 2, Section 2-201, which replaces “Only a marriage between A MAN AND A WOMAN is valid in this State” with “Only a marriage between TWO INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE NOT OTHERWISE PROHIBITED FROM MARRYING is valid in this State.”

There is an identical set of bills introduced in the House of Delegates, House Bills 55 & 175, which will be heard in the House Judiciary Committee on Feb. 25 at 1:00 p.m. Favorable reports from this committee and passage in the full House is expected.

Your brothers and sisters in Christ are asking you and your congregations to be engaged in the following:

·Be in prayer that God’s will and His standard on the institution of marriage, as the union between a man and a woman, be upheld.

·Calling to mind that God loves all of His Creation and ‘God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us’ – let us demonstrate the character of God by displaying His love as the Spirit continues His work of sanctification through His people. Let us guard our hearts and tongues from the forces of Satan that seek to mute and destroy our testimony.

·‘We are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us…’ Please contact your MD State Senator and express your view, in Christian love, opposing Senate Bill 116. Attached to this e-mail you will find a list of the Maryland’s 47 State Senators and their contact information.

Again, this bill is expected to be voted on in the Senate within the next TEN days and stands to be a VERY CLOSE vote, and we need your immediate action.
