Open Door Baltimore:  Letter From CEO - William Simpson

Open Door Baltimore is not your daddy’s mercy ministry.

At a time when the words, “inner city,” have become a tragic euphemism for despair and hopelessness, ODB
has quietly re-written the rules of the road for charitable organizations that serve the poor and disadvantaged
in our cities.

Gone are the days of symbolic gestures and half-hearted initiatives. Gone, too, are the shallow justifications
for intergenerational poverty and social failure.

ODB knows the real score. It knows that real solutions start with a true appreciation for the people being
served -- their dreams as well as their challenges.  It’s why “keeping it real” has become the heartbeat of ODB.

Since 2006, ODB has doggedly pursued new solutions for old problems in historic East Baltimore. Once
home to thousands of proud shipping and manufacturing households, neighborhoods from Oliver to McElderry
Park have suffered from decades of joblessness, drugs, violence, and blight.

Today, these neighborhoods are among the poorest in the nation. In the most important city in the most
affluent state in America, they stand as a vivid reminder that in spite of her gleaming buildings and downtown
destinations, Baltimore desperately needs our help.

That’s where you come in. By supporting the MMBA Fellowship Open Golf Tournament, you are saying to
people everywhere that impoverished families in Baltimore matter to you. By playing in the tournament, or by
agreeing to be a sponsor, you are helping ODB with crucial financial support to continue its work.

In addition to clothing and feeding ministries, ODB provides invaluable life skills coaching, adult education,
chaplaincy, mentoring, and workforce development programming. ODB firmly believes that the best children’s
program is a job for Mom and Dad.

ODB is also a player in the affordable housing marketplace. From 2011 to 2013, ODB will place a minimum of
80 young adults, most of whom are ex-offenders, in full-time construction jobs turning boarded-up houses into
affordable new homes for hundreds of Baltimoreans.

Thank you for getting involved in the mission of ODB through this wonderful golf outing. What better way to
spend a beautiful fall day than to make a difference in the lives of others while teeing off with your buddies.

See you on September 20th!
