Baptists in Maryland and Delaware hold a rich and interesting history. The journey through the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries was made by Christians committed to serving the cause of Christ. The history of the organized Baptist Convention of Maryland/Delaware, beginning in 1836, and continuing until today, reflects not only the impact of Baptists in Maryland and Delaware, but significant influence in the Southern Baptist Convention. Maryland/Delaware Baptists can be characterized as pioneers with a heart for missions.
The recorded history of the Convention reflects the importance and impact of laypersons on its history. The stories of the early leaders show that the laity, who were not as worried with the theological or social issues of the day, worked together with strong ministers to strengthen weak churches and start new ones.
