Disaster Relief Update: Irene-August 27

Hurricane Irene Irene made landfall near Cape Lookout, North Carolina, about 7:30 a.m. EDT as an 85-mph, category 1 hurricane. As the storm marches up the east coast Southern Baptist Disaster Relief leaders and volunteers are making preparation to move in behind the storm and "wash the feet" of residents from South Carolina to new England.

The large, slow moving storm is dropping a foot or more of rainfall in some regions, pounding the coast with high seas, flooding coastal regions with a 4-8 foot storm surge, spawning tornados and spreading tropical storm winds 250 miles from the storm center.

Volunteers from Maryland/Delaware Disaster Relief have a feeding unit set up at the Salisbury Civic Center on Maryland's eastern shore where they prepared their first meal on Saturday morning. Once the storm passes an area state Disaster Relief directors will begin mobilizing resources to meet identified needs.  Full Article
